GMT-Master 16700

Here’s another Rolex GMT-Master with reference 16700. This watch (like our other GMT) is also a U-serial production watch, but dates dates back to 1997. Of course this GMT also shares the same cool characteristics as its slightly younger brother.

U-serial GMT’s are known for the fact that the dial is marked with the SWISS-T<25 printing right below the six o’clock position, when in fact all luminous material inside the indices and hands is Luminova. Dials used on the U serials were older dials already manufactured before the time Rolex started to move away from Tritium as the luminescent compound for their dials and hands, and made the decision to use Luminova instead – However, very early U serials (like this GMT here) still feature a true Tritium dial, but already feature the updated Luminova hands (first step in the Luminova transition) The above described ‘anomaly’ only occurred during the production of the U serial GMT, sometimes also called the transitional GMT by collectors, which makes this particular Rolex a cool and perhaps rare watch, and an interesting buy at that if you wish to own a 16700 more rare then its siblings. The entire watch remains in a good condition with a strong case with fat lugs and a well preserved, stainless steel bezel. That stainless steel bezel is either fitted with a beautiful and original, black Serif font insert, or a bright, red and blue Pepsi replacement insert – Whatever you choose, both inserts will be delivered with the watch. This GMT is worn on its original 78790 Oyster bracelet with Oyster Lock clasp.

As always, this 16700 U serial GMT from 1997 was fully serviced by our Rolex trained watchmakers and the watch will be sold with our 24 month warranty.
