Omega 30T2 Tropical Dial

During the tumultuous years of World War II, now ‘celebrating’ its 80th anniversary, Omega, the renowned Swiss watchmaker, played a critical role in supplying timepieces to various armed forces. The 30T2 movement became synonymous with dependability and precision in difficult wartime conditions. These watches continue to fascinate enthusiasts and collectors, even after eight decades.

The heart and the existence of these iconic timepieces today, lies in the 30T2 movement, a manual-winding caliber known for its robustness and accuracy. Watch enthusiasts and collectors cherish the craftsmanship that went into creating this movement, making it a sought-after piece in the world of vintage watches. Omega’s collaboration with military forces during World War II is evident in the design of the watch dials. Arabic numerals, known for their legibility, were prominently featured on military-issued watches. The clean and straightforward layout of the dials reflected the practical needs of servicemen in the field. One distinctive feature that sets apart the Omega watches from the 1940’s period is the use of so-called “leaf hands.” These elegant, yet large tapered hands not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the watch, but also enhance readability. Another one of the enchanting features of this particular vintage Omega is the coveted “Tropical dial.” Over the span of 80 years, this dial has undergone a transformation, acquiring a warm, aged hue. This phenomenon, often referred to as “tropicalization,” adds a unique charm to this timepiece, making it a one-of-a-kind work of art almost. Collectors appreciate the Tropical dial not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for the historical narrative it weaves into the fabric of these timepieces.
