Rolex Datejust Mid-Size

Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945 to commemorate the company’s 40th anniversary. The Datejust’s date complication was displayed in a window at 3 o’clock on the watch dial, a revolutionary invention back then. Over the years, Rolex has offered various case sizes for the Datejust to cater to different preferences and wrist sizes. The 31mm case diameter ‘mid-size’ variant that we’re offering here was launched to provide a more versatile option for people who found the standard Datejust models (usually 36mm for men’s watches and smaller for women’s watches) either too large or too small. The mid-size 31mm Datejust was created to appeal to a wide range of clientele, it was available to both men and women, making it a unisex option back in the day – These mid-size Datejust watches are also referred to as the ‘boy’s size’ Rolex.

This particular 31mm Datejust has an anniversary dial, which is also referred to as a Computer dial. This dial design was used on several Rolex models, most notably the Rolex Datejust and Rolex Day-Date watches. The nickname ‘Computer dial’ was given to these dials because the pattern on them resembled the perforated cards used in early computers. These dials were distinguished by a textured, checkerboard-like pattern with small squares and rectangles that repeated the Rolex brand name. They were offered in a variety of color combinations, including silver, black and champagne, among other dial colors with white or yellow gold applied hour-markers. These anniversary dials were introduced in 1985 to commemorate and celebrate Rolex’s 80th birthday, therefore this Datejust incorporates the joy of two Rolex anniversaries in one watch. As mentioned, the Arabic numbers on the dial are machined from 18k white gold and the Oyster bracelet remains in a more than fair condition with polished center-links, brushed outer-links, brushed lugs and a polished, smooth bezel.

Note that the black dial is slowly changing color, most notable in day or sunlight, but it can also be seen in some of the photo’s above. The colour coming through the black lacquer is best described as a taupe or light brown colour. This aging effect is often referred to as a tropical dial, which absolutely makes this Datejust a unique Rolex – I’m sure you won’t find another one exactly like it. As always, this Rolex Datejust Mid-Size was fully serviced by our watchmakers and will be sold with our extensive 24 month warranty.
